RJ May and family

RJ May defeated Mike Sturkie In Tuesday's runoff election. The two were competing  to fill Lexington County's SC House Dist. 88 that is opening because incumbent Rep. Mac Toole is not running for reelection.

May won by less than 200 votes, according to the unofficial count. May received just under 1,400 votes to just over 1,200 for Sturkie. May won 53% to 47%.

There is not a Democrat running for the seat and May is not expected to face any opposition in the November General Election.

In a statement May said:

"Special thanks to Mac Toole and his family, whose endorsement and support meant so very much to me. Mac’s a tough act to follow. But I pledge to do my best to carry on his legacy of standing true to conservative principles while also providing outstanding constituent service.
To everyone who voted for my opponents in the recent primary and runoff, thank you for participating in

this election. We may not see eye to eye on everything, but as fellow conservatives we share more things in common than we have differences. I look forward to talking with you in the coming weeks and hearing your ideas for how to move our state forward."

Sturkie also issued a statement:

"Thank you to all the family, friends, volunteers, and supporters who worked so hard and gave so much to this campaign. It wasn't the result we hoped for, but I am extremely proud of the positive, issue driven campaign we ran. Our community is a special place, and like so many of you, it's very dear to my heart. I will continue to work hard to keep it a great place to live, work, and a raise a family for my grandchildren's sake."
